Eco-Afro Futures Initiative

In an era marked by profound uncertainty regarding the impacts of climate change on society, Black communities continue to be sidelined within mainstream sustainability movements and lack access to vital climate science information. This is despite the heightened climate-related risks confronting Black communities worldwide. In the United States, it is imperative to cultivate widespread awareness, common goals, and community solidarity around the distinct experiences of Black people in the face of climate change.

Eco-Afro Futures Initiative is guided by the central question: "What must we demand to shape the future we urgently need?"

Our initiative serves as a platform to amplify, interconnect, and celebrate the voices of Black environmental scientists, sustainable business leaders, educators, and conservationists.

The culmination of these efforts is our annual summit, which brings together the Black communities of California's East Bay region alongside their allies. The summit aims to bridge the artificial divides between local grassroots organizers, businesses, educators, and students, recognizing their invaluable insights for scientific inquiry and imaginative exploration.

During the summit, attendees can expect to engage in speeches and panel discussions led by prominent Black environmental thought leaders. Additionally, the event will feature creatively designed spaces that foster dialogue and learning, as well as showcase Black-owned, Earth-centered businesses.

Eco-Afro Futures offers accessible entry points for individuals at all levels of environmental knowledge. Drawing upon the aesthetics of Afrofuturism and organizing principles of Freedom Schools, Eco-Afro Futures is a Black History Month mobilization of Black culture towards just, sustainable futures.

The enhanced scientific literacy, collaborative partnerships, and shared agenda emerging from this gathering will revolutionize our approach to constructing a sustainable ecological future that benefits us all.
