Human Waste Recapture in Haiti: Implications for Soil Health and Sovereignty
Critical Ecology Team: Dr. Suzanne Pierre
External Collaborators: Professor Rebecca Ryals (UCM), Elena Bischak (UCM), SOIL
Description: We are collaborating with the Ryals Lab at UC Merced and SOIL (NGO) to quantify how recapture of nutrients and carbon from human excreta (circular sanitation systems) reduces emissions and strengthens soil microbial health and plant production on Haitian agricultural land. We are looking at this question across land-use legacies (smallholder farms, monoculture for export crops, traditional agroforestry) through the lens of neoliberal dependency theory (i.e. the metropole and its satellites) and open/closed nutrient cycles.
