Founding an Independent Research Lab to Change our Planetary Future, a lecture by Dr. Pierre

On Friday, March, 15th 2024 Critical Ecology Lab Founder & Director, Dr. Suzanne Pierre, will join Rockefeller University's Friday Lecture Series for their Annual Science of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lecture.

In recent years, our planet has borne witness to numerous societal and climate crises. The presence of oppressive systems, power imbalances, and knowledge gaps significantly shape the understanding and investigation of global climate and ecological change within the scientific community. Consequently, we inhabit a world where the unequal impacts of these issues are felt among diverse populations.

The Critical Ecology Lab aims to establish a scientific foundation for understanding evolving Earth systems in conjunction with persistent social inequalities. Through groundbreaking research methods, we strive to challenge and reshape fundamental scientific understanding and practices, as well as public narratives surrounding the Anthropocene. By contributing to a robust body of evidence, our lab endeavors to bolster political action addressing global change. Ultimately, our goal is to redefine the audience and methodologies of global change science, promoting inclusivity and transformation within the field

During this lecture, Dr. Pierre will share about the founding and evolution of our distinctive independent research institution. She will also provide examples of the lab's socially critical approach to Earth systems research, along with our vision for advancing liberation within the scientific community.

The Annual Science of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lecture

The Annual Science of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lecture was established by the University in 2020. The goal of this lecture is to highlight the impactful research by leaders in the science of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This lecture is hosted by members of WISeR (Women in Science at Rockefeller), RockOut (Rockefeller's LGBTQ+ organization for sexual/gender minorities), and RiSI (The Rockefeller Inclusive Science Initiative).

 The Friday Lecture Series

The Friday Lecture Series is one of the principal university-wide activities of the academic year. Scientists from around the world, and from varying disciplines, are invited to speak to the Rockefeller community and members of neighboring institutions to share their recent research, techniques, and findings. Lectures take place in the university’s Caspary Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. (preceded by a tea/coffee reception at 3:00 p.m.)

The Rockefeller University

The Rockefeller University is a private biomedical research and graduate-only university in New York City, New York. It focuses primarily on the biological and medical sciences and provides doctoral and postdoctoral education. It is classified as a "Special Focus – Research Institution".

Critical Ecology Lab is a non-profit founded by Dr. Suzanne Pierre in 2020 to integrate the scientific and generational knowledge of oppressed communities to fight against social and planetary crises. They do this by facilitating informal education resources, creating novel scientific research, and activating communities towards climate action.
