Science to Action: Grassroots Activism for Scientists

On Thursday, December 14th, 2023 Critical Ecology Lab (CEL) Founder & Director Dr. Suzanne Pierre presented a symposium at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual meeting in San Francisco, CA.

From December 11th to 15th 2023, the Critical Ecology Lab team attended the American Geophysical Union (AGU) annual meeting representing our leadership in Earth Science research.

During the Science and Society segment, Dr. Pierre gave a presentation titled “The Critical Ecology Lab: Research Towards a Liberatory Anthropogenic Change Episteme”. It emphasized CEL's mission and research on the terrestrial biogeochemical legacy effects of colonial resource extraction. She discussed the activism involved creating an independent organization using the Critical Ecology framework. Integrating socially critical Earth systems research enhances social liberation efforts within and beyond the traditional scientific community.

We extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Rose Z. Abramoff at the Ronin Institute for Independent Scholarship, to all participants for their outstanding contributions to the meeting, and to AGU for facilitating this enriching experience.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU)

AGU is a global community supporting more than half a million advocates and professionals in the Earth and space sciences. Through broad partnerships, AGU aims to advance discovery and solution science that accelerates knowledge and creates solutions that are ethical, unbiased, and respectful of communities and their values. Their programs include serving as a scholarly publisher, convening virtual and in-person events, and providing career support. AGU was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences for over 50 years. We were independently incorporated in 1972.
